Lukas 8:39

8:39 “Return to your home, ¹  and declare ²  what God has done for you.” ³  So ⁴  he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole town ⁵  what Jesus ⁶  had done for him.

Lukas 13:17

13:17 When ⁷  he said this all his adversaries were humiliated, ⁸  but ⁹  the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things ¹⁰  he was doing. ¹¹ 

Lukas 20:2

20:2 and said to him, ¹²  “Tell us: By what authority ¹³  are you doing these things? ¹⁴  Or who it is who gave you this authority?”

Lukas 23:25

23:25 He released the man they asked for, who had been thrown in prison for insurrection and murder. But he handed Jesus over ¹⁵  to their will. ¹⁶

[8:39]  ³ sn Jesus instructs the man to declare what God has done for him, in contrast to the usual instructions (e.g., 8:56; 9:21) to remain silent. Here in Gentile territory Jesus allowed more open discussion of his ministry. D. L. Bock (Luke [BECNT], 1:781) suggests that with few Jewish religious representatives present, there would be less danger of misunderstanding Jesus’ ministry as political.

[8:39]  ⁴ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the man’s response to Jesus’ instructions.

[8:39]  ⁵ tn Or “city.”

[8:39]  ⁶ sn Note that the man could not separate what God had done from the one through whom God had done it (what Jesus had done for him). This man was called to witness to God’s goodness at home.

[13:17]  ⁷ tn Grk “And when.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[13:17]  ⁸ tn Or “were put to shame.”

[13:17]  ⁹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[20:2]  ¹² tn Grk “and said, saying to him.” This is redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation.

[20:2]  ¹⁴ sn The leadership is looking back to acts like the temple cleansing (19:45-48). How could a Galilean preacher do these things?

[23:25]  ¹⁶ sn He handed Jesus over to their will. Here is where Luke places the major blame for Jesus’ death. It lies with the Jewish nation, especially the leadership, though in Acts 4:24-27 he will bring in the opposition of Herod, Pilate, and all people.
